The Unlucky Adventures of Lucky — Episode 13: Gas Fees and Broken Dreams
You ever feel like the blockchain gods are plotting against you?
Because today, they definitely were. It all started when I woke up feeling extra bullish. I saw a coin pumping on Twitter, “Next 100x Gem,” they said. I didn’t even read the chart. I just opened my wallet, ready to make history.
And then… bam!
Gas fees: $89.45.
To swap $50 worth of tokens.
I refreshed. Waited. Refreshed again.
The fees went up. Like… how does that even work? It felt like trying to buy suya and being told you’ll need to rent the grill too.
The Great Ethereum Traffic Jam
Apparently, the entire crypto world decided to trade at the same time.
Ethereum was congested. The blockchain version of Lagos traffic.
Every time I tried to confirm the transaction, another fee popped up, network fee, priority fee, “are you sure you want to suffer?” fee.
By the time I finally swapped, my profit was gone, burned into gas.
I didn’t even break even. I basically paid to lose money.
That’s when I realized: gas fees are not just numbers.
They’re emotional damage, priced in Gwei.
The Hard Lesson
Crypto isn’t just about buying low and selling high, it’s about when and where you trade.
Some blockchains are like private jets, fast but expensive.
Others, like Polygon or BNB Chain, are budget airlines, less fancy, but they’ll get you there.
Lucky (yes, me 🙃) learned the hard way:
* Always check gas fees before trading.
* Avoid peak hours when everyone’s swapping.
* Or better still, use platforms that let you choose lower-fee networks.
Because profits don’t matter if you burn them all in gas.
The Moral of the Story
In crypto, timing is everything, not just for price, but for the cost of doing business.
It’s like trying to buy concert tickets online; if you rush in with the crowd, you’ll end up paying extral or worse, watching from the sidelines.
So yeah, Dear Diary… today wasn’t my day.
Gas fees: 1. Lucky: 0.
But at least next time, I’ll pick a chain that doesn’t charge me for breathing.
